***FIRST WOODEN BOAT CONSTRUCTED BY SCOUTS LAUNCHED***
On Saturday the 29th July 2017 Mgarr Baden-Powell Sea Scouts launched their boat at Gnejna Bay for the first time.
The wooden boat named SSS (Sea Scout Ship) Firefly was completely rebuilt after the original, which had virtually fallen apart, was donated to the crew by a well-wisher. It is believed to be the only such project undertaken by Scouts in Malta for over 100 years.
Using the original as a template the boat was rebuilt from scratch by a team of Sea Scouts from Mgarr. Along the way they have learned to use both hand tools and power tools, they have also had to learn to work with wood, metal and fibre glass. The youngest Scout is 11 the oldest is 15.
They were ably supervised by Mr George Mangion, President of Baden-Powell Scouts Malta who says:
?Learning by doing is the cornerstone of Traditional Scouting, all the work on this boat was done by the Scouts themselves with me providing guidance. The project is truly their own. Well done to you all?
Mark Spice who took over running Mgarr Baden-Powell Sea Scouts in November 2016 says:
?I have worked with Scouts of all ages in the UK as well as Army Cadets. I have never worked with such motivated young people, I only have to ask them to do something and it is done without complaint. They are a credit to themselves, to Scouting and to young people everywhere, I am proud to lead them, they will be an asset to any future employer and to their country?

***Duke of Edinburgh International Award Scheme***
Baden-Powell Scouts Malta (BPSM) is delighted to announce that the organisation is now able to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh International Award scheme to its members aged between 14 to 25 years.
Previously known as The President?s Award, Duke of Edinburgh International aims to provide challenges to young people under four categories: Skill, Physical Recreation, Service and Adventurous Journey. It is a staged award running from Bronze to Silver to Gold. It is a scheme originally set up in the UK with HRH Prince Phillip (Duke of Edinburgh) lending his name to the award.
Co-ordinator of the scheme within BPSM (Mark Spice) says this:
?This is an exciting opportunity for our Scouts as it runs neatly alongside our training programme. The scheme is truly open to all no matter what their abilities are. The key is to challenge yourself and to show improvement, it is non-competitive, the emphasis, especially for the adventurous journey, is on teamwork. Important skills for life are learned whilst participating in the scheme as well as the Scout training programme. Young people are our leaders, doctors, engineers, academics, soldiers and workers of the future. We need to invest in them.?

***PRESS RELEASE***
Friday the 1st September 2017 to Monday the 4th September saw groups from Baden-Powell Scouts Malta (BPSM) travelling to Trapani in Sicily for their annual adventure.
Groups from Mtarfa, Qormi, Mgarr (Sea Scouts) and St Paul?s Bay (Sea Scouts) were represented.
The camp was organised by Mr George Mangion, President and International Commissioner of BPSM and senior leaders within the organisation. It was hosted by local Sea Scouts in Trapani who very kindly gave us the loan of their HQ and camping equipment for the weekend. 45 people took part which included leaders, parents acting as helpers, Wolf Cubs and Scouts.
Exciting activities included kayaking in the sea at Trapani, a visit to an adventure park where Scouts of all ages had the opportunity to try their hand at climbing, zip wires and aerial rope work. On the Sunday there was a hike around the historic town of Erice with opportunities to buy souvenirs and traditional Scout games in the evening on the beach back in Trapani.
Local Scouting dignitaries and the Vice Mayor of Erice, Architect Salvatore Angelo Catalano, visited and were treated to traditional Maltese food. The 'Thanks Badge' was awarded to Ms. Antonella Scuderi for her assistance during the various trips by BPSM to Trapani since 2014.
The end of the camp was marked with the investiture of three new Scouts and a new adult appointment of Sea Scouting Commissioner, Mr Victor Brincat (Group Scout Leader St Paul?s Bay Sea Scouts).
Everyone returned to Malta tired but happy on Monday the 4th September.
Thanks are given to our brother and sister Scouts in Trapani!
